ARCHIVE/Marbella 2022
Ara Malikian
Ara Malikian performed at Starlite Occident Marbella on August 31, 2022, his third consecutive year at the festival. The violinist improvised a piece dedicated to the venue and finished the concert playing in the stalls.
Third year running at the quarry
Malikian first played the festival in 2020 and has not missed a year since. After a run of opening pieces, he addressed the audience: "I'm very happy to be back at Starlite Occident, in this wonderful, spectacular and inspiring place. After everything the planet has been through, we're thrilled to be able to do something so special." He also had words for the founders: "Thank you, Sandra and Ignacio. This is a wonderful festival where wonderful things happen." As on every visit, he wove family and personal anecdotes between the pieces.
From "Life On Mars" to "Nana Arrugada"
The set included "Life On Mars", "Calamar Robótico", "Taling Naning" and "Kriklor Aklor", as well as an improvised piece dedicated to the festival, which he named on the spot. The violinist set aside part of the concert for the classical music he trained in, with the "Prelude No. 4", and closed with "Nana Arrugada", played among the audience in the stalls. Chef José Andrés, Gunilla von Bismarck and Luis Ortiz watched the concert with Sandra García-Sanjuán.
In his third straight summer at Starlite Occident Marbella, Ara Malikian left behind a piece improvised for the festival and a lullaby played between the seats.
