Placido Domingo
Plácido Domingo performed at Starlite Occident Marbella on July 11, 2022, alongside soprano Ainhoa Arteta and a full orchestra, with Marta Sánchez as special guest. The concert arrived a year later than planned.
A concert a year in the waiting
The evening with Plácido Domingo and Ainhoa Arteta had been scheduled for the previous summer, but the serious health problems the soprano suffered at the time, from which she has since recovered, forced a postponement. In 2022 the two finally shared the Auditorium stage. It was the tenor's third time at the festival, as he reminded the audience: "I will not sing one day more than I can, nor one day less than I should. Thank you Sandra and Ignacio, this is the third time I have been with you at Starlite Occident and I feel happy here".
From "Nemico della patria" to "Alfonsina y el mar"
Plácido Domingo opened the recital with "Nemico della patria" and handed over to Ainhoa Arteta, who sang "Quand je vous aimerai", the habanera from Carmen. Together they went on to perform "Dite alla giovine", "¿Me llamabas, Rafaeliyo?", "Là ci darem la mano" and "Calle el labio". The soprano also offered "Alfonsina y el mar", the first song she played on a guitar as a child: "I can't play the guitar any more, but I'll play the zambomba or whatever it takes", she joked.
Marta Sánchez and a three-voice finale
Marta Sánchez, dressed in red, joined the two opera singers for the final stretch. The three of them performed the Spanish national anthem with the lyrics she wrote, accompanied by the orchestra and with the audience on its feet, and closed with "Bésame mucho". Watching from the Presidential Box were Valeria Mazza, with her husband Alejandro Gravier and their daughter Taina, actress Blanca Romero, Pedro Trapote and his wife Begoña, Fiona Ferrer and singer Geno Machado, together with festival founders Sandra García-Sanjuán and Ignacio Maluquer.
A year later than planned, Plácido Domingo and Ainhoa Arteta finally sang together at Starlite Occident Marbella, on the tenor's third visit to the quarry.
