Eleven years after the first Starlite edition
Christopher Cross chose Starlite Occident Marbella to deliver his only Spanish concert. After a successful US and Japan tour, the talented American singer-songwriter appeared at the Auditorium. "I played here in the first edition, 11 years ago. Starlite Occident has grown so much and I'm very honoured to return. I remember the festival only lasted two weeks, and now it's more than 70 nights of shows". The Texan artist burst onto the scene in 1980 with his self-titled debut album, winning five Grammy Awards: it was the first time an artist took all four most coveted prizes (Record, Album, Song of the Year for "Sailing" and Best New Artist).
Sailing, Ride Like the Wind and an Oscar for Arthur's Theme
In a career spanning more than four decades, Cross has sold over 10 million albums. His music also won an Oscar for "Arthur's Theme", a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination. The 80s star moved the audience with his unmistakable soft rock. "Sailing", "Ride like the wind", "Alright" and "Never be the same" rang out. "Starlite Occident is spectacular and unique. There's no place like it. The stone surrounding the stage, the natural amphitheatre… this is a very special place for the audience, but also for us artists," Cross confessed.
Minister Iceta brings forward his 63rd birthday
Familiar faces enjoying the experience: Paula Echevarría and Miguel Torres, Valeria Mazza and Alejandro Gravier, Rosana, Cayetana Guillén Cuervo and Reyes Maroto. Comedian Carlos Latre celebrated his wife's birthday at the festival. Also Spanish Culture and Sports Minister Miquel Iceta enjoyed the concert and took the chance to celebrate his birthday: "In a few days I turn 63, so Christopher Cross is the music of my youth and I want to sing Ride like the wind. August 17 is my birthday, when the Congress of Deputies is constituted. I'll celebrate today, even if a few days early".
With Christopher Cross, Starlite Occident Marbella confirms its Auditorium as a unique Spanish destination for the legends of American soft rock who have made the festival their reserved date with European audiences.
