Yusuf Cat Stevens
On 21 June 2023 Yusuf / Cat Stevens opened the XII edition of Starlite Occident Marbella with one of only two shows he would play worldwide that summer. It was his first Spanish concert since 1976, and he chose the Nagüeles quarry to reunite with an audience that had waited almost half a century.
A historic choice: Starlite Occident to come back to Spain
The British singer-songwriter was clear about his motive: "I chose Starlite Occident for its open-air Auditorium under the stars, its special nights… I had seen many photos and it's an incredible place". His next and final stop would be Glastonbury. Music lovers travelled from around the world to see a 100-million-album artist inducted into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Setlist: half a century of songs in a single night
Yusuf / Cat Stevens revisited his most iconic catalogue — 'Wild World', 'Father and Son', 'Peace Train' and 'The Wind' — alongside tracks from his recent album "King Of A Land". His lifelong pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and peace shaped every acoustic ballad, with a crowd surrendered to songs that already belong to several generations.
Celebrities at the opening box
The opening gala welcomed musician José María Cano, who confessed to the artist "probably, the first song I ever played in my life was The Wind"; journalist Pepe Navarro; TV host Jesús Álvarez; and Gibraltar's Chief Minister Fabián Picardo. Backstage, Guitarras MR presented Yusuf with a special edition entirely handcrafted in Toledo.
That June night entered festival history as a true milestone: a legend's reunion with a country that had waited 47 years, on the most magical stage in the Mediterranean.
