Gipsy Kings ft. Nicolas Reyes sold out at Starlite Occident Marbella on July 19, 2024, in their second consecutive year, turning the Auditorium into a big flamenco and rumba party.
40 years later, flamenco icons return
It was 1987 when the French flamenco group formed by brothers Nicolás and André Reyes presented "Gipsy Kings". Tracks like "Bamboleo" and "Djobi Djoba" became international sales hits. Almost 40 years later, Gipsy Kings' music has not only not gone out of fashion, but sounds more current than ever. The evening at the Starlite Occident Marbella Auditorium delighted a devoted audience with latest creations and timeless classics like "Hotel California", "Volare" or "A mi Manera". The Gipsy Kings gave themselves with all their energy and charisma in their second consecutive festival visit.
Brigitte Bardot baptised the name and C. Tangana collaborated
The name's origin is legendary: actress Brigitte Bardot saw them perform in southern France and referred to them as the "Gipsy Kings" when they still went by their family surnames. The Reyes adopted the name and dedicated her "La dona" from "Allegria" (1982). More recently, C. Tangana invited them to collaborate on "Ingobernable" from "El Madrileño" (2021). The Reyes brothers, sons of flamenco artist José Reyes, were artistically united until a few years ago. Today, both singers tour stages around half the world paying homage to a discography that keeps expanding its aura of mysticism.
Sold out with Aznar, Bismarck and DJ Nano at Sessions
The Gipsy Kings' success comes down to two concepts: Nicolás' wonderful flamenco voice and a group of talented, unrivalled gipsy kings with guitars, percussion and keys. Enjoying the concert were familiar faces like Nicole and Barbara Kimpel, Gunilla von Bismarck, Pepe Navarro, José María Aznar with Ana Botella, and Tony Mils. The night continued at the Sessions space with DJ Nano. The Madrid producer debuted one of his four residency nights at the boutique festival, taking over from the Gipsy Kings to keep the audience enjoying until dawn.
With Gipsy Kings, Starlite Occident Marbella reaffirms its Auditorium as an international home for the great myths of flamenco-rumba that return to the festival as if it were home.
