Lila Downs and Ara Malikian doubly moved the Starlite Occident Marbella audience on July 12, 2024, with the Mexican mestizaje of 'Dos Corazones' and the virtuosity of the Lebanese violin.
Lila Downs: Mexican mestizaje debuts at the cantera
One of the most heartfelt and moving voices of Latin America, the Mexican-American Lila Downs, opened the evening. Powerful and with mestizaje as her flag, the singer, songwriter, anthropologist and actress immediately captured the Auditorium. In the show, part of her world tour "Dos Corazones", she alternated tracks from "La Sánchez" (2023) with songs spanning more than 30 years of career. "Starlite Occident Marbella is a very beautiful place. For me, nature is sacred and being in spaces surrounded by trees, stones and mountain moves me," she greeted. "Son de Chile", "Clandestino", "El Último Trago" and "Cariñito" rang out, between rancheras, northern cumbias and corridos.
Ara Malikian: fourth visit with Ara, tribute to his son
After Downs' vigour, Lebanese-Armenian violinist Ara Malikian became the next protagonist. The master debuted at the festival in 2020, 2021 and 2022. In this fourth appearance he dazzled with "Ara", the show with which he will continue touring Spain, the UK, France and Portugal until January 2025. "I'm very happy to come back to Starlite Occident. This festival brings out the best in you. Playing here is therapy," he declared. Playing the violin as an extension of his body, Malikian took the audience to multiple emotional places. The album "Ara" is inspired by his son Kairo: "It's an encounter with the child I couldn't be and would have dreamed of being."
