Plácido Domingo

Date: 13 AugVenue: Marbella

Plácido Domingo celebrated his fourth appearance at Starlite Occident Marbella on August 13, 2024, with a sold out dedicated to Zarzuela, the genre he learned from his parents and still defends worldwide.

Four decades connected to the Nagüeles cantera

At 83, veteran tenor and baritone Plácido Domingo —one of the discoverers of the magnificent acoustics of the Nagüeles cantera in the 80s, long before it became the festival's setting— performed for the fourth time at the Auditorium after his appearances in 2015, 2021 and 2022. He showed the perfect form of his great voice, and the masterful command of the stage he has always carried. "I'm happy to be here again, this time celebrating Zarzuela, my parents' music. I hope you enjoy it very much," the tenor said.

Spanish Night: Zarzuela as family heritage

The opera legend chose to move the audience with his "Noche Española", combining an anthology of Zarzuela —a lyric genre mixing spoken scenes with songs— with popular arias created in Spain. His parents, Plácido Domingo Ferrer and Pepita Embil, were prominent zarzuela artists. For Plácido, every performance is a tribute to his parents. Backed by soprano Serena Sáenz, fragments rang out from "La boda de Luis Alonso" (1987) by Gerónimo Giménez; "La del soto del Parral" (1927); "Los Gavilanes" (1923); "Luisa Fernanda" (1932) by Moreno Torroba; "El Sombrero de Tres Picos" by Manuel de Falla; and "Doña Francisquita".

Luche la fe por el triunfo and Masquerade by Claptone

Plácido Domingo also performed and was moved by "Luche la fe por el triunfo", a piece with deep connection to his mother Pepita Embil's life and legacy. Among the audience were faces like Argentine actor Óscar Martínez with Marina Borensztein, Begoña Trapote, Monika Bacardi and Ivonne Armant, Plácido Domingo's granddaughter. After the concert, music continued at the Sessions stage with "Masquerade" by Claptone, one of the most top parties of the moment, inspired by the masked balls of the Venetian carnival.

With Plácido Domingo, Starlite Occident Marbella reaffirms its Auditorium as a natural stage for the legends of international lyric who defend Spanish musical heritage before the world.
