ARCHIVE/Marbella 2026
Deep Purple
Deep Purple performed at Starlite Occident Marbella on July 9, 2026. The British band played the songs from SPLAT!, their new studio album, in Spain for the first time, six days after its worldwide release.
SPLAT! gets its Spanish premiere in the quarry
With more than five decades behind them, Deep Purple chose Marbella to play their new material to a Spanish audience for the first time. The night was opened by King Sapo, a band from Madrid that shared the bill with them: one of rock's historic names and a group from the generation coming up behind, on the same stage.
Ian Gillan: "The acoustics are extraordinary"
After the concert, Sandra García-Sanjuán congratulated Ian Gillan in person. The singer was struck by the venue: "I've performed all over the world and rarely have I found a place like this. It's a magical place and the acoustics are extraordinary." As well as being the voice of Deep Purple, Gillan sang the role of Jesus on the original 1970 recording of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Reunions in the boxes and backstage
Bibiana Domit, a regular at the festival, watched the concert from the presidential box with Sandra García-Sanjuán. In another box was Javier Banderas, brother of Antonio Banderas. Travelling with the band's technical crew was Alberto Marín, guitarist for Mónica Naranjo and a former MasterChef Celebrity contestant, who introduced himself as "Albertito": García-Sanjuán had met him as a child in Tenerife and had not seen him since.
Deep Purple added Starlite Occident Marbella to their history with a premiere: the first concert in Spain for their new album, with Ian Gillan won over by the quarry's acoustics.
